For about a century, if you lived in an industrial British town and needed to be at the mill, the docks, or the factory gate by six, you didn't set an alarm. You paid a stranger a few pence a week to come and physically wake you up, on foot, in the dark, every single working morning. The job was called a knocker-up, and it existed for a completely practical reason: the technology to wake yourself reliably simply didn't exist yet for most people.
The job itself
A knocker-up's round worked like a small, precisely timed delivery service, except the thing being delivered was consciousness. They'd walk a fixed route of streets each morning, arriving at each client's home at an agreed time, and rouse them without waking the whole household or the neighbors. Early on, some just knocked on the front door, which tended to wake everyone inside plus whoever was sleeping next door, so the trade adapted. The standard tool became a long pole, often as tall as a fishing rod, tipped with wire or a hard knob, used to rap directly on an upstairs bedroom window.1
Other knocker-ups got more inventive. The best-known was Mary Smith, who worked London's East End using a pea shooter loaded with dried peas, pinging them at her clients' windows for sixpence a week per household.2 It's a wonderfully odd image, a woman walking dark streets before dawn, quietly firing peas at glass to keep a factory running on time, but it worked well enough that she kept doing it for decades.
The trade clustered in specific places for specific reasons: the mill towns of northern England, where shift work meant different workers needed waking at different hours, and London's docks, where laborers answered to the tide rather than the clock and might need rousing at 3am one day and 9am the next. A knocker-up who got the round wrong, waking someone late or not at all, could cost a client their wages or their job, so reliability mattered enormously for work that paid almost nothing.
Why not just buy a clock
The obvious question is why anyone needed a human alarm at all. The answer is that mechanical alarm clocks were, for most of the knocker-up's working life, either too expensive, too unreliable, or both. Early alarm clocks were largely the preserve of the wealthy, and even once cheaper mass-produced versions started appearing in the late 1800s, factory workers on tight wages still weren't rushing out to buy one that might not even go off correctly.3 A knocker-up, by contrast, was a person, and people are considerably harder to sleep through than a bell with a worn spring.
Looked at as a set of options, the tradeoffs were pretty stark:

None of these were particularly elegant. What they had in common is more interesting than any of their individual flaws.
The real pattern underneath the pea shooter
Every option on that list, without exception, is an external, physical, attention-grabbing interruption. Nobody in this story is relying on simply deciding to wake up on time. That's not a coincidence, and it's not really about the Industrial Revolution specifically. It reflects something much older about how human sleep works.
Waking up is not a light switch, it's a gradual climb, and for a stretch right after you first stir you're in a state called sleep inertia, where your brain is still mostly offline even though you're technically conscious (see why mornings feel foggy even after a full night's sleep for the full mechanism). Left to its own devices, a half-woken brain is remarkably good at deciding that going back to sleep is the correct call. That's exactly why every solution on the table above is loud, physical, or both. A soft internal nudge is easy to sleep through. A pole rapping on glass six centimeters from your head is not.

There's a deeper evolutionary layer to this too. Researchers studying sleep in modern hunter-gatherer groups like the Hadza have found that across an entire night of communal sleep, almost every single sampled moment had at least one member of the group awake or in light sleep, functioning as an informal lookout.4 The proposed explanation, known as the sentinel hypothesis, is that human sleep architecture evolved around the idea that somebody is always semi-alert, because sleeping in a group with zero vigilance was historically dangerous. For most of human history, the "alarm" wasn't a device at all, it was another person, awake at the right moment, ready to raise the alert. The knocker-up wasn't a strange industrial-era invention so much as the same very old arrangement, formalized into a paid trade with a fixed schedule and a pea shooter.
What replaced them, and what didn't
Knocker-ups faded out through the mid-1900s as cheap, dependable alarm clocks finally reached working-class households, and later as factory sirens and, eventually, radio time signals took over the job of getting everyone moving at once. In a few pockets of industrial England, the trade reportedly hung on into the early 1970s, an oddly long overlap with a world that already had transistor radios in most homes.
The tool changed, but the underlying need never went away. Your phone alarm is doing exactly what Mary Smith's pea shooter did: forcing an external, hard-to-ignore signal into a brain that would otherwise happily talk itself back to sleep. If you've ever wondered why a gentle wake-up app that fades in slowly leaves you groggier than a sharp, insistent alarm, this is most of the answer. Sleep inertia doesn't respond well to subtlety. It never has, whether the year is 1850 or this one.
