- Chronotype
- Your natural, biologically driven preference for when you sleep and wake, often described loosely as being a "morning lark" or a "night owl." It's influenced by genetics and shifts somewhat with age, part of why one universal bedtime never works for everyone.
- Circadian rhythm
- Your body's roughly 24-hour internal clock, mainly set by light exposure, that decides when you feel sleepy and when you feel alert. Jet lag is what happens when that clock and your actual location disagree. more...
- Cognitive Shuffle
- A technique (and a real psychological theory) built around mimicking the disjointed, low-stakes mental images your brain naturally produces right before sleep. Picking a random word and picturing an unrelated object for each letter is the practical version. more...
- First-night effect
- A documented pattern where one half of your brain stays more alert than the other on your first night sleeping somewhere new, producing lighter sleep and more awakenings. It's your brain standing guard, and it eases up by the second night. more...
- Hypnagogia
- The transitional, half-awake half-asleep state right as you're drifting off, often marked by vivid, fragmented images or the odd sensation of falling. It's a normal part of falling asleep, not a sign anything's wrong.
- Ironic process theory
- The psychological effect where trying hard not to think about something keeps it circulating in your mind instead, because part of your brain has to keep checking whether you're succeeding. - Melatonin
- A hormone your brain releases in the evening as light fades, signaling that it's time to wind down. Bright light, especially in the evening, suppresses it, which is the real mechanism behind most "dim the lights before bed" advice. more...
- Microsleep
- A brief, involuntary lapse into sleep lasting just a few seconds, usually caused by significant sleep deprivation. It can happen with your eyes open, which is why it's worth taking seriously behind the wheel if you're running on very little sleep.
- Paradoxical intention
- A counterintuitive insomnia technique where you deliberately try to stay awake instead of forcing yourself to fall asleep. It works by removing the performance pressure that keeps an anxious brain wired in the first place. more...
- REM sleep
- The sleep stage where most vivid dreaming happens, marked by rapid eye movement, faster brain activity, and a body that's mostly paralyzed so you don't act out your dreams. It shows up in every sleep cycle, but the stretches get longer as the night goes on. more...
- Segmented sleep
- A historical sleep pattern, documented before widespread artificial light, of two separate sleep periods with an hour or so of quiet wakefulness in between. Whether it was humanity's single universal default or one pattern among several is still an open question among historians. more...
- Short sleeper
- Someone whose body is built to run well on around 6 hours of sleep, a rare, genetically linked trait affecting roughly 1% of people. Most people who think they're short sleepers are just used to running on sleep debt instead. more...
- Sleep apnea
- A condition where breathing repeatedly stops and restarts during sleep, often loud snoring followed by silence and a sudden gasp for air. It's a medical condition worth raising with a doctor if you suspect it, not something to self-diagnose from a glossary entry.
- Sleep cycle
- A repeating loop of lighter sleep, deep sleep, and REM that runs roughly every 90 minutes through the night, though the real number varies a lot by person. Each cycle isn't identical, deep sleep dominates the early ones, REM takes over later. more...
- Sleep debt

- Sleep hygiene

- Sleep inertia
- The groggy, foggy feeling in the 15 to 30 minutes after waking up, caused by your brain's decision-making regions booting up slower than the rest of it. It happens even after a great night's sleep, so it's not a verdict on how well you slept. more...
- Sleep pressure
- The steadily building urge to sleep that accumulates the longer you've been awake, driven largely by a molecule called adenosine collecting in your brain. Caffeine works by temporarily blocking your brain from sensing that buildup, not by clearing it away.
- Slow-wave sleep
- The deepest, most restorative stage of sleep, named for the big, slow electrical waves your brain produces during it. Most of it happens early in the night, which is part of why the first couple of hours matter so much. more...
- Stimulus control
- A sleep therapy technique built on one idea: your brain learns to associate the bed with whatever you consistently do in it. If that's scrolling or lying awake stressed, the fix is only using the bed for sleep, and getting up when you're not sleepy. more...
- Targeted memory reactivation
- A sleep-lab technique where specific sounds linked to something you learned while awake get quietly replayed during sleep, nudging your brain to reinforce that particular memory. It's real and replicated, but it only strengthens things you already learned, it doesn't teach new material. more...
