"Everyone needs 8 hours" gets repeated so often it sounds like a biological law, usually by the exact same person who then brags about running on 5. It isn't a law. It's closer to a rounded average that got treated as a universal rule, and the actual research on individual sleep need tells a much more interesting story, one with real genetics behind it and a specific reason the 8-hour number exists in the first place.
Where the 8-hour number actually came from
The now-famous "8 hours" figure has roots that are more industrial than biological. It traces back to the 8-8-8 model pushed during the Industrial Revolution: 8 hours of work, 8 hours of leisure, 8 hours of rest, a tidy political slogan for labor reform, not a finding from a sleep lab. Modern guidelines land somewhere in a 7-to-9-hour range for most adults precisely because that's a population average with a wide spread around it, not because every individual body needs exactly that number.
The genetics are real, and increasingly well mapped
Twin studies estimate that genetics account for roughly 40 to 50% of the variation in how much sleep a person needs and how well they sleep, which is a substantial chunk.1 That alone explains a lot of the "why does my partner need way more sleep than me" conversations happening in bedrooms everywhere.
But the more striking evidence comes from a specific, rare trait called familial natural short sleep. In 2009, researchers led by Ying-Hui Fu identified a mutation in a gene called DEC2 in a family whose members consistently slept around 6.25 hours a night, compared to about 8 hours for people without the mutation, without any signs of the cognitive or health problems normally associated with sleep deprivation.2 Since then, researchers have found several more genes tied to the same trait (ADRB1, NPSR1, GRM1 among them), each affecting circuits involved in wakefulness and activation.3 These aren't people white-knuckling through sleep deprivation and calling it fine. Their biology is measurably different.
To be clear, this specific genetic trait is thought to affect only a small fraction of people, roughly around 1%. Most people who "function fine on 6 hours" are not short sleepers in this genetic sense, they're sleep deprived people who've adapted to feeling used to it, which is a very different thing (more on that distinction below). But the trait proves the underlying point: sleep need is not a single fixed number handed down for the entire species, it has a real, biological range.
How to tell if you're actually a short sleeper, or just used to being tired
The self-check most people skip, because they'd rather believe they're special, looks like this. Genuine short sleepers report waking up spontaneously, without an alarm, feeling properly rested rather than foggy (the ordinary kind of sleep inertia that can hit anyone, short sleeper or not), and they maintain that pattern consistently, including on weekends and vacations when there's no external reason to wake up early. If you rely on an alarm every single day, feel groggy without caffeine, and sleep noticeably longer when you're not forced to get up, that's not a short-sleep gene talking, that's ordinary sleep debt, the same sleep debt everyone else is carrying around like an overstuffed backpack.

A reasonable way to actually find your number: on a stretch of days with no early obligations (a real vacation works better than a weekend), let yourself wake up naturally for several days in a row without an alarm. Your sleep duration will likely be longer than usual for the first night or two as you pay down existing sleep debt, then settle into something closer to your genuine baseline. That settled number, not whatever a headline says everyone needs, is the one that actually applies to you.
Trust the alarm-off test, not the slogan
The 8-hour rule was a decent population-level rounding, not a personal prescription. Some people are truly built to run well on 6 hours, most people who think they are aren't, and the only way to know which camp you're actually in is to pay attention to how you feel with your alarm turned off, not to a number from a slogan invented for factory shifts.
