Bedroom temperature advice almost always lands on the same number: 18°C. The mechanism behind it is solid science, but that single number turns out to fit some people much better than others.

The actual mechanism: your body has to cool down to fall asleep

Your core body temperature naturally starts dropping before you fall asleep, and the rate of that drop is one of the better predictors researchers have found for when sleep onset actually happens.1 This isn't your body responding to a cold room, it's an active internal process: blood vessels in your hands and feet dilate, sending warm blood to your extremities and letting heat radiate out through your skin, which is part of why your feet can feel warm right as you're getting sleepy even in a cool room.

This distal-to-core temperature shift turns out to be one of the more reliable physiological signals of approaching sleep, in some research more consistent than people's own subjective reports of feeling sleepy.2 Your body is, quite literally, dumping heat as part of the process of switching into sleep mode. A room that's too warm can blunt that natural heat loss and make the whole process sluggish, which is the real, solid reason "sleep in a cool room" keeps showing up in every list.

Where "18°C" stops being a universal rule

That number comes largely from studies on younger and middle-aged adults. A 2023 study tracking nearly 11,000 nights of sleep data across 50 older adults found something different: sleep was most efficient specifically in a warmer range, between 20 and 25°C, with sleep efficiency measurably dropping once the room climbed above that.3

The likely explanation is that thermoregulation itself changes with age, older adults often have a reduced capacity to generate and retain heat, so a room cold enough to be ideal for a 30-year-old can actively work against a 70-year-old's ability to sleep well. It's a good reminder that a lot of "universal" sleep numbers are really population averages, useful as a starting point, worth adjusting once you know where you actually fall.

What this actually means for your bedroom

Cooler is generally right, within a range, not a single magic number. Somewhere around 18 to 20°C is a reasonable starting point for most younger and middle-aged adults, but treat it as a starting point to adjust from, not a target to hit exactly.

If you're older, or sleeping with someone significantly older or younger than you, don't assume one temperature works for both of you. The age-related difference here is large enough to actually matter, not a rounding error, which is useful ammunition next time the nightly thermostat negotiation breaks down.

Pay attention to your hands and feet, not just the thermostat. Since the mechanism runs through blood flow to your extremities, uncomfortably cold feet can work against the same process a too-warm room does. Adjust based on how you actually sleep, not on a number you read once. If you consistently wake up sweaty, go cooler. If you consistently wake up cold and can't get back to sleep, the room might already be colder than what your specific body actually needs.

A dial, not a rule

The biology behind "cool room, better sleep" is real and well-supported. The specific number attached to it is a population average that quietly assumes everyone's thermoregulation works the same way, and it doesn't. Use temperature as a lever you actively adjust based on how you sleep, not a rule you follow because it was the top result on a list. It's one lever among several, alongside things like light exposure and the rest of your bedtime routine.
